🎥 Tesla Unveils Flying Roadster Powered By SpaceX Thrusters, With Production Planned For 2028

Oct 16, 2026·2 min read

Tesla unveiled its next-generation Roadster Thursday night at a livestreamed event at SpaceX’s rocket test and development center in McGregor, Texas, showing the car lift off the ground using rocket-style thrusters.

Elon Musk said the car is the product of a collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX engineers. During the event, Tesla engineers said the thrusters run on compressed air stored in two ultra-high-pressure tanks totaling 600 liters, holding about 250 kilograms of air and feeding 10 nozzles. The car can refill its own air tank.

The Roadster also uses a fan-based suction system that Tesla says lets it corner at more than 2 G, compared with about 1.26 G typical for tires alone. Musk said the car can top 230 miles per hour, and Tesla showed a 0 to 60 mph test run of about one second.

Musk said the car used in the demo was technically autonomous for safety, but that the production Roadster will be the only manually driven car Tesla makes. He said it will be an actual car for the road, though not necessarily legal in every jurisdiction, and that production is planned to begin in 2028. He also floated a follow-up demo attempting a jump over a canyon.

Tesla’s website is taking reservations, with a $50,000 deposit for the “Performance” trim and $250,000 for “Thrust,” while a one-seat “Rocket” trim is invite only. No price has been announced. The Roadster was first revealed in 2017 and has been delayed repeatedly since.
