Saddle Brook Man Charged With Attempted Murder and Aggravated Arson Following Incident in Plumsted Township
A 36-year-old Saddle Brook man has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated arson following an incident in Plumsted Township that left a woman hospitalized with burns and smoke inhalation.
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced Friday that Justin Martin, 36, was charged in connection with the incident, which occurred Thursday, October 15, in a wooded area near Hawkin Road and Success Road.
At approximately 1:36 p.m., Plumsted Township Police and EMS responded to a 911 call reporting a female burn victim. First responders found the woman in distress and suffering from burns. She was transported to Temple University Burn Center in Philadelphia, where she remains in stable condition.
An investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Plumsted Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit determined that Martin caused the woman to suffer burns and smoke inhalation while the two were in the wooded area. Authorities said Martin then fled in a vehicle, leaving the injured woman stranded.
Detectives located Martin in Asbury Park at approximately 12:15 a.m. Friday. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Ocean County Jail, where he remains pending a detention hearing.
Prosecutor Billhimer credited multiple law enforcement agencies, including police departments in Asbury Park, Eatontown, and Keansburg, along with the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office, for their assistance in the investigation.
The charges are accusations, and Martin is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
