Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said Saturday that he intends to leave office when his current presidential term expires in 2030, insisting that the matter is settled and that Egypt’s constitution will not be changed to extend his rule.
“I said that the Egyptian constitution would not be touched,” he said. “This is an entirely settled matter and will not be discussed,” he added, referring to the conclusion of his presidency.
Sisi, 71, is currently serving a six-year term after winning reelection in December 2023. Constitutional changes approved in a 2019 referendum lengthened presidential terms from four years to six and permitted him to pursue a third term, allowing him to remain in power through 2030.
Sisi’s Path to Power
A former military general, Sisi came to power in 2013 after removing Mohamed Mursi, Egypt’s first democratically elected president, following widespread demonstrations against Mursi’s government.
Sisi made the comments on Saturday while attending a graduation ceremony for new cadets at Egypt’s Military Academy.
