MI K’AMCHA YISROEL: Lakewood Community Rallies to Save Shabbos Sheva Brachos After Caterer Fails to Show Up

Oct 18, 2026·1 min read

A heartwarming story of community unity unfolded Friday evening in Lakewood’s Hearthstone neighborhood after a family preparing for a scheduled Shabbos Sheva Brachos at a local shul discovered that their caterer had never shown up, leaving them with no food for the simcha.

The family only realized the situation about 20 minutes before Mincha, when they arrived at the shul hall and found nothing prepared. As word of the crisis quickly spread throughout the neighborhood, residents immediately sprang into action. Families generously gave up food from their own Shabbos meals, emptied their freezers, and arranged for additional food to be brought in from nearby halls and Simchas.

In one particularly touching gesture, another local shul donated the cholent and kugel that had been prepared for its Friday night boys’ learning program, after receiving permission from the boys themselves.

By the time davening concluded, the neighborhood’s incredible generosity had turned a potential disaster into a beautiful Simcha, with enough food collected to serve all three Shabbos meals.

What began as a last-minute crisis became a remarkable display of Achdus and Chesed, showing how an entire community can come together to help a fellow family in need.
