New Jersey American Water (NJAW) contractors are currently canvassing neighborhoods in Lakewood as part of an ongoing statewide effort to identify and replace lead and galvanized steel water service lines.

According to an update shared by Lakewood Township, crews working with NJAW contractor CDM Smith are visiting properties in the Route 9 South area, between Central Avenue and Cross Street, specifically within census tracts 7155.03 and 7157.01.

The work is part of New Jersey’s Lead Service Line Replacement Program, established under a 2021 state law requiring water providers to identify and replace lead and galvanized steel service lines by 2031. The program covers both utility-owned and property-owned portions of the pipes connecting homes and buildings to water mains.

Residents can identify their service line material themselves and submit photographs to New Jersey American Water or schedule a free in-person inspection at a convenient time. Inspections typically take approximately 15 minutes, and authorized canvassers may also visit designated homes to assist residents.

Workers will wear high-visibility vests displaying New Jersey American Water and CDM Smith logos and carry official identification. They will never request sensitive personal or financial information or documentation.

Lakewood Township emphasized that all inspections and replacement work are conducted exclusively by New Jersey American Water or its authorized contractors, not township employees or other government agencies.

Residents can continue using their water as usual, as New Jersey American Water says its drinking water continues to meet all state and federal water quality standards, including those related to lead.
