New Jersey Health Officials Warn Flu Activity Is Already Higher Than Last Year

Oct 18, 2026·1 min read

New Jersey health officials are urging residents to take precautions ahead of the upcoming respiratory virus season, as early influenza activity across the state is already exceeding levels recorded during the same period last year.

Although overall flu activity remains relatively low, state officials say the early increase serves as a reminder that influenza can spread quickly as colder weather approaches.

Governor Mikie Sherrill and Health Commissioner Dr. Raynard Washington are encouraging residents to prepare by taking preventive steps to protect themselves and their families.

The New Jersey Department of Health recommends annual influenza vaccinations for everyone six months of age and older, along with regular handwashing and other precautions to help limit the spread of respiratory illnesses.

Health officials are continuing to monitor influenza activity throughout the state as the fall and winter seasons approach.
