Calgary Opera Fires Singer After Palestinian Flag Stunt During Tosca Curtain Call

Calgary Opera has fired bass-baritone Gabriel Sanchez-Ortega from its production of Tosca after he displayed a Palestinian flag during the curtain call, turning the closing moments of the performance into a political statement.

Ironically, Tosca is set in Rome in 1800, an era when Jews faced severe discrimination, were confined to the Roman Ghetto, and were legally barred from owning property.

Yet rather than acknowledge Europe’s own dark history of antisemitism, the performer chose to use the stage for a Palestinian political demonstration.

There is a difference between legitimate political expression and hijacking an artistic performance to promote a cause without acknowledging the suffering inflicted by Hamas on Israelis and Palestinians alike.

The opera house’s decision raises a broader question: Should performers be allowed to turn a production audiences paid to see into a platform for their personal political activism?
