Macron Condemns Foreign Leaders for ‘Stupid’ Remarks About France’s Riots
French President Emmanuel Macron has criticized comments from international leaders about the unrest in France, calling their remarks “unacceptable and stupid” as protests and riots continue to draw international attention.
Speaking to reporters in Doha, Macron said he had seen no clear evidence of foreign governments directly intervening in the events unfolding in France. However, he accused outside actors of spreading manipulated information that had prompted inappropriate reactions from several figures, including foreign heads of state.
Macron said France did not need foreign politicians “using our problems for their election campaigns,” arguing that domestic unrest should not be exploited for political advantage abroad.
The French president did not identify any foreign leaders specifically.
His comments followed an interview with i24News on Tuesday in which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described France as facing an “invasion of extremist Islam.” The remarks came after large demonstrations over economic hardship reportedly escalated into violent confrontations over the weekend.
Netanyahu argued that French authorities had failed to adequately prepare for the unrest and attributed the violence to radicalized Muslims. His assessment came amid demonstrations involving people from a broad cross-section of French society in several major cities, including Paris.
US President Donald Trump has also weighed in, linking the unrest to immigration from Muslim-majority countries and criticizing European border policies.
“If Europe doesn’t close its borders and bring the criminals out, like the people that are protesting, Europe is finished,” Trump said. “When I look at France, when you look at Italy, when you look at all the turmoil and the hatred that’s not about school. That’s about people coming into the countries that hate the country.”
