Report: Israel Prepared Iran Strikes for October 10, but Trump Opposed Restarting War Before U.S. Midterms
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed Israel’s military to prepare a major attack on Iran for the weekend of October 10, but President Donald Trump opposed restarting the war before the U.S. midterm elections, the Financial Times reported Wednesday, citing three people familiar with the matter.
According to the FT, the planned multi-day campaign would have targeted Iranian nuclear facilities and regime sites, as well as civilian infrastructure including power plants, and would have been more intense than the U.S.-Israeli strikes in February. The report said it was unclear whether the U.S. would have joined or Israel would have acted alone.
The sources said Trump decided not to resume the fighting before the November 3 midterms. One source told the FT it was “not an unreasonable scenario” for strikes to restart in the coming weeks, after both the U.S. and Israeli elections. Another source said, “There will either be a deal or an attack.”
One source suggested the planned strikes could have been part of a negotiating tactic and said any decision to restart the fighting rested with Trump. The Pentagon did not comment, according to the FT.
The Jerusalem Post, citing sources, reported Wednesday that the IDF was not planning a strike on Iran on October 10 and that no government official had told the military to prepare an attack of the kind ordered before previous rounds with Iran. The Post’s sources said the IDF has been on a war footing several times in recent months, including around October 7.
The report comes two days after U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made an unannounced visit to Israel and met with Netanyahu. On October 9, Trump said the U.S. would not attack Iran before the midterms. Israel holds its own election next Tuesday.
The report follows Belaaz’s earlier coverage. On October 8, Belaaz first reported that Israel had raised its alert level and stepped up security preparations for a possible Iranian attack. On October 16, Belaaz reported that Israeli Air Force jets had been airborne for a fifth straight night, armed and ready for a possible Iranian strike.
