New restrictions on e-bikes and e-scooters took effect yesterday in the Village of Monroe.
Under the new rules, e-bikes and e-scooters are prohibited on all sidewalks and inside Airplane Park, Crane Park and Smith’s Clove Park. Class III e-bikes, which can reach speeds of up to 25 mph, are banned throughout the village.
Riders must keep their speed at 15 mph or below and follow a nighttime curfew. From April through October, riding is prohibited between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. During November through March, the curfew runs from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Riders must wear a properly fastened helmet, and their vehicles must have working reflectors on the front and back. Headlights must be turned on during low-light conditions, including dawn, dusk, fog and rain. Towing trailers or other attachments behind or beside the vehicle is also prohibited.
Violations can carry fines of up to $125 for missing required safety equipment. Riding a prohibited Class III e-bike can result in a fine of up to $250, increasing to $500 for repeat offenses.
The restrictions apply to children and adults alike. Parents are encouraged to review the new requirements with their children before they ride.
