Governor Sherrill Slams House Republican Subpoena Over New Jersey Voter Registration Errors
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill fired back Wednesday at House Republicans over a congressional subpoena issued in connection with a voter registration controversy involving the state’s Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC).
The subpoena is part of a congressional investigation into registration errors that resulted in thousands of individuals being improperly registered to vote through the MVC system.
In a strongly worded statement, Sherrill accused Republicans of playing political games just 13 days before the November 3 midterm elections rather than focusing on issues affecting Americans, including rising costs.
The governor defended her administration’s handling of the matter, saying officials took immediate action after discovering the registration problems dating back to 2023, implemented agency-wide reforms, and remained transparent throughout the process.
Sherrill specifically criticized President Donald Trump, Congressman Jeff Van Drew, and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, accusing them of using congressional oversight powers for political purposes.
“This subpoena is political theater, plain and simple,” Sherrill said.
Republican lawmakers have maintained that their investigation is necessary to determine how the registration errors occurred, whether proper safeguards were in place, and how the state addressed the issue.
Sherrill concluded by reaffirming her commitment to maintaining secure and fair elections in New Jersey while continuing efforts to reduce costs for residents.
