ANTISEMITIC ATTACK? NYPD Probes Smashed Bank Windows, Anti-Israel Graffiti in NYC
A bank in New York City was vandalized, with its windows smashed and antisemitic graffiti painted in red.
The Capital One branch on the Upper East Side was found with the words “Drop Elbit” and “Pal Action” spray-painted in red on its doors Monday. The incident occurred between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. at East 86th Street near Second Avenue.
Palestine Action is a U.K.-based pro-Hamas group that has been proscribed by the United Kingdom. In August 2024, the anti-Israel group broke into Elbit Systems, an Israeli-owned defense contractor and inflicted a lifelong disability on a security guard by smashing her back with a sledgehammer. The group has engaged in attacks against military installations and weapons manufacturers in the United Kingdom, destroying property during the course of its attacks.
The New York Police Department has launched a probe into Monday’s vandalism, which it is investigating as criminal mischief and a possible bias incident.
Speaker of the New York City Council Julie Menin, who is Jewish, condemned the incident in a statement and said it might be an act of antisemitism.
“The vandalism and destruction at the Capital One branch on 86th Street is deeply disturbing and unacceptable,” she said. “I have been in contact with the NYPD regarding this incident and have urged an immediate investigation, including whether this is a potential antisemitic hate crime.”
“There is no place for hate, intimidation or violence in New York City,” she added.
