Greece Moves Toward Sanctions on Iran-Linked Law Firm After US Treasury Action
ATHENS, Greece — Greece’s Finance Ministry says it is enforcing existing sanctions related to Iran and supports measures aimed at strengthening efforts to combat money laundering and terrorist financing.
The announcement follows a statement from the US Treasury Department a day earlier that it had sanctioned Karnakis & Karnakis, a law firm operating in Greece and Panama. US officials allege that the firm has provided legal services to Iranian shipping networks for several years.
The US Treasury also announced that the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network had issued an administrative subpoena as part of an investigation involving an unnamed Greek bank.
Greece’s Finance Ministry said it had reviewed the US Treasury’s announcement and confirmed that “all available information is being evaluated, and appropriate measures are being taken in accordance with established procedures and applicable national, EU, and international law.”
