Netanyahu Rejects Report That Trump Blocked Israeli Strike on Iran Ahead of US Midterm Elections
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied claims that US President Donald Trump prevented Israel from launching another attack on Iran earlier this month, disputing a report that Washington opposed renewed hostilities ahead of the American midterm elections.
“That report is incorrect,” Netanyahu told Channel 7 when asked about the Financial Times report. He declined to disclose the details of his recent discussions with Trump concerning Iran.
According to three people familiar with the situation who spoke to the British newspaper on Wednesday, the Israel Defense Forces had been prepared to launch attacks during the weekend of October 10. The reported targets included Iranian nuclear facilities, sites associated with the regime, and civilian infrastructure such as power and energy installations.
The sources, who were not identified, claimed Trump decided against restarting the conflict before the November 3 US midterm elections. Netanyahu is also approaching a crucial political test, with Israel scheduled to hold its Knesset election on Tuesday as he faces a difficult campaign for reelection.
Diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran have largely stagnated in recent months, with Iran’s nuclear program remaining the central point of contention. Tehran insists its nuclear activities are intended for peaceful purposes. However, Iran has enriched uranium to levels well beyond typical civilian requirements, restricted access for international inspectors, and continued developing its ballistic missile capabilities.
