ICC Wins EU’s Top Human Rights Award as Trump Administration Presses for Sanctions
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has received the European Union’s prestigious Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced, as the court faces continued pressure from the United States.
“The European Union is built on respect for multilateralism and international institutions, and this prize recognises the important work of the court in upholding international law and justice,” Metsola told lawmakers in Strasbourg.
President Donald Trump’s administration has maintained a confrontational stance toward the ICC, previously imposing sanctions on several of its prosecutors and judges.
Washington’s opposition stems partly from arrest warrants the court issued for Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The US has also objected to an earlier ICC investigation into alleged actions by American troops in Afghanistan, a probe the court has since closed.
