🚨Not a U.S. Citizen? DO NOT VOTE!

By Y.M. Lowy

With Election Day approaching, there is an important reminder for anyone who is not a U.S. citizen: having a green card, a visa, or another immigration status does not give you the right to vote in local elections.

Even if you are registered to vote or receive a ballot in the mail, that does not mean you are eligible. Voting in a federal election as a noncitizen is against the law and can lead to serious criminal and immigration consequences.

This is not theoretical. Right now, members of our Heimishe community are sitting in jail and dealing with complications with ICE because of this.

For immigrants, the consequences can go beyond the vote itself. In some cases, unlawful voting can affect a person’s immigration status or future applications to remain in the United States.

There may also be risks when traveling abroad. Depending on the circumstances, someone who voted while not eligible could face questioning or detention when trying to leave or return to the United States. Anyone who has voted and is concerned about their situation should speak with a qualified immigration attorney before making travel plans.

If you are not a U.S. citizen, do not assume you can vote just because you are registered or a ballot arrives at your home. Check your eligibility before filling out or submitting a ballot.

Please share this reminder with family and friends. If you or someone you know is unsure about voting eligibility, take the time to check before making a mistake that could have serious consequences.
