Lakewood Residents Who Missed Water Pipe Inspections Can Still Schedule Free Assessments

Oct 22, 2026·2 min read

New Jersey American Water is reminding Lakewood residents that they can still have their water service pipes inspected for lead and other materials, even if door-to-door canvassers have already visited their neighborhoods.

The utility announced that its door-to-door canvassing program in Lakewood is entering its final phase. Since May, authorized contractor CDM Smith has been visiting properties with unknown service line materials as part of New Jersey American Water’s statewide Lead Service Line Replacement Program.

Residents who missed the canvassers or were unavailable during their visits can still participate by scheduling a free inspection or submitting information about their water service pipes online.

Residents have two options:

  • Schedule a free inspection: Call CDM Smith at 732-590-4700 or visit calendly.com/njaw.

  • Self-report online: Residents who prefer not to have someone enter their home can answer a few questions and upload photos of their service line at newjerseyamwater.com/leadsurvey.

The inspections help the utility identify service pipe materials and determine which lines may require replacement. If a service line is confirmed to contain lead or galvanized steel, it will be replaced at no additional cost to the customer, as replacement costs are already incorporated into monthly water bills.

Homes and buildings constructed before 1987 are more likely to contain lead pipes or components, making it especially important for those property owners to participate. However, New Jersey American Water is encouraging all customers to verify their service line materials, regardless of when their properties were built.

The utility emphasized that all inspections are free and that CDM Smith representatives will carry official photo identification and wear branded, high-visibility vests. Representatives will never request payment or personal financial information.

The canvassing and inspection program is conducted on behalf of New Jersey American Water and is not affiliated with any government agency.

Residents seeking additional information can visit newjerseyamwater.com/leadfacts, email [email protected], or call 732-590-4700.

New Jersey American Water thanked Lakewood residents for their cooperation throughout the canvassing process, noting that participation has met or exceeded expectations.
