Netanyahu Announces Aggressive New IDF Strategy in Hebron After Terror Attack

Oct 23, 2026·3 min read

HEBRON (VINnews) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Friday that the Israel Defense Forces will implement a new operational approach in a Hebron neighborhood, including the evacuation of residents, house-to-house searches, the removal of weapons, and the demolition of terrorist infrastructure.

Speaking while visiting the area near the site of a shooting attack earlier in the day, Netanyahu said the IDF would apply the model previously used in refugee camps in Judea and Samaria, which he described as terrorist strongholds. “We are going to implement the successful and aggressive model we used in the refugee camps,” he said. “That is exactly what we will do here, in a neighborhood in Hebron from which the terrorists emerged. We will evacuate the residents, go from house to house, remove the weapons there, and address and demolish all terrorist infrastructure.”

The announcement followed a shooting incident near Hebron in which two terrorists opened fire at an Israeli checkpoint, wounding five Israelis, two of them critically. Israeli forces killed both attackers. Authorities said the men, identified in reports as Mohammad Jaaba and Firas Jaaba, both 27 and from Hebron, were found with an automatic rifle, a handgun, and a large quantity of additional ammunition, indicating plans for a larger-scale attack on civilians.

Netanyahu also ordered a siege on the cities of Hebron and Halhul and said the government would consider expanding the new model to other locations. He directed the accelerated clearance of illegal structures along roads, which he said pose a threat to security forces.

In addition, the prime minister said he and the defense minister have reviewed plans for a broad-scale IDF operation in Judea and Samaria “unlike anything carried out since the Six-Day War.” He stated that the military is prepared and that the timing would be determined later, adding that “it is coming.”

Netanyahu linked the attack to earlier warnings about efforts to harm Israelis ahead of elections. He praised the soldiers who confronted the gunmen, saying they “stopped them with their own bodies and were also wounded” before eliminating the attackers.

Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that the Hebron neighborhood would see the evacuation of residents and the destruction of terrorist infrastructure, following the approach used in the Jenin refugee camp. Katz said those involved in terrorism or providing support “will pay a very heavy price.”

The measures come amid ongoing security operations in the area, including arrests and efforts to prevent further attacks originating from Judea and Samaria.
