Creator Of ‘Nobody Wants This’ Says She Disagrees With Adam Brody’s Israel Comments

LOS ANGELES (VINnews) – Erin Foster, creator of the Netflix romantic comedy “Nobody Wants This,” said she disagrees with star Adam Brody’s recent description of Israel’s war in Gaza as a genocide, while stressing that her series was made as a “love letter to Judaism.”

Foster, who converted to Judaism before marrying music executive Simon Tikhman, addressed Brody’s remarks during an appearance on the “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast. Brody, who plays Rabbi Noah Roklov opposite Kristen Bell, told GQ in September that he views the conflict as a genocide and supports “a free Palestine.” He said it was “awful that it’s taken so much death and misery” and expressed hope that another U.S. administration would change related policies.

Foster described their differences as similar to debates at dinner tables and on sets worldwide. “While I love Adam, I also disagree with him, and that’s okay,” she said. She added that she wants Jewish viewers to know “I see you and I hear you, and I understand how you feel.” The show, she said, “has always been and always will be a love letter to Judaism. That is why I made this show,” citing her positive experience becoming Jewish and the need for positive Jewish representation at a time when she said there is “almost zero” of it.

Foster has previously said the series intentionally avoids geopolitics. In earlier interviews she noted that the show does not address Israel or the broader conflict because it would be a distraction from its focus on Jewish life and interfaith relationships.

Brody’s comments drew sharp criticism last month from Rabbi Steve Leder, who served as a consultant on the first season and is the former senior rabbi of Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles, where Foster converted. Leder called the remarks “ignorant” and “flippant,” arguing that Brody misused the term genocide and presented opinion as fact. Leder has defended Foster’s approach to the show.

“Nobody Wants This,” which is loosely inspired by Foster’s own conversion and relationship, stars Brody as a rabbi who falls for an agnostic podcast host played by Bell. Season 3 of the series recently premiered on Netflix. The Fosters have previously expressed public support for Israel and Jewish communities following the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack.

Foster said people are entitled to different opinions and that her role as creator is to convey the show’s original intention of offering positive Jewish stories.
