Trump Warns Iran Could Face New Strikes Before Midterms, but Says Deal Remains Possible
President Donald Trump reacted sharply when asked how close the United States might be to launching another military attack against Iran.
Trump recently stated on social media that he would refrain from striking Iran again before the November 3 US midterm elections. However, when questioned about whether that position still stood, he replied, “Do you really think I’m going to tell you if I’m going to do it?” Trump added, “And there’s a possibility I will. There’s also a possibility we’ll have a nice, big, beautiful agreement.”
The president again maintained that Tehran is interested in reaching an agreement with Washington, while raising doubts about whether Iran would honor its commitments. “but the problem is, will they hold the deal?” he said.
Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accused the United States of undermining diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war. Despite his criticism, he indicated that he still believes negotiations should be brought to a conclusion, saying “we have to go and finish it.”
Speaking in remarks broadcast on Iranian state television, Pezeshkian said Iran’s supreme leader had directed officials to “go and finish [the deal],” but “these scoundrels broke the rules of the game. We were holding talks, and they disrupted them.”
Across the region, concerns are mounting that the United States or Israel could launch fresh attacks against Iran either before or shortly after Israel’s Tuesday election or the November 3 US midterm elections.
