Attempted Murder and Arson Charges Against New Jersey Man Dismissed After Woman Accused of Providing False Information
Attempted murder and aggravated arson charges against a 36-year-old Saddle Brook man have been dismissed after investigators determined that the woman who accused him of trying to kill her in Plumsted Township had provided false information to law enforcement.
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced Saturday that all charges against Justin Martin, 36, were dismissed on Friday, October 23, in the interests of justice.
The investigation began on October 15, when Plumsted Township Police and EMS responded to a wooded area near Hawkin Road and Success Road following a 911 call reporting a woman suffering from burns.
The woman, identified as Villano, was transported to Temple University Burn Center in Philadelphia, where she received treatment before being released several days later.
During the initial investigation, Villano told authorities that her boyfriend had attempted to burn and kill her while they were in the wooded area with another individual.
Martin was subsequently charged with attempted murder and aggravated arson on October 16. Detectives located him in Asbury Park, where he was taken into custody without incident. He was released from the Ocean County Jail on October 19.
However, further investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and New Jersey Conservation Police determined that Villano had provided false information about how she sustained her injuries and who was responsible.
On October 23, Villano was arrested at Eatontown Police Headquarters and charged with two counts of falsely incriminating another person. She was transported to the Ocean County Jail, where she remains pending a detention hearing.
As a result of the investigation and the charges against Villano, prosecutors dismissed all charges against Martin.
Prosecutor Billhimer credited multiple law enforcement agencies for their collaborative efforts in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident.
