Israeli Forces Launch Major Hebron-Area Operation After Two Soldiers Killed
Israeli security forces carried out an extensive operation near Hebron following a deadly attack that killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded three others. The response included searches, arrests, evacuations and the demolition of structures that the military said could interfere with its operations.
The soldiers killed were identified as Roytman, 23, from Ashkelon, and Svilem, 20, from Hod Hasharon. The three wounded soldiers reportedly sustained light injuries.
According to the initial account, two Palestinian assailants opened fire near the Judea Junction. Security forces killed both attackers. Investigators believe the assailants may have intended to continue toward Route 35.
Following the attack, Israeli forces expanded their activity throughout nearby Palestinian communities. Approximately 2,000 residents were evacuated from the affected area as troops searched buildings and other locations. The military also reported demolishing structures it considered obstacles to its operations.
The IDF said the demolitions involved illegal construction that could hinder security activity. The operation also included searches at roughly 200 locations and the detention of 10 suspects, according to the report.
Residents leaving the area were directed through designated exit points, where security personnel conducted screenings. The measures significantly disrupted daily life for people living in the affected communities.
The Hebron-area operation came amid other Israeli security activities in Judea and Samaria, including operations in Jenin, Nablus, Kafr Aqab and Tamun. These efforts form part of a broader campaign targeting suspected militants and security threats.
The evacuations and demolitions are likely to draw scrutiny over their impact on civilians and the legal grounds cited for the measures. The military maintains that its actions are intended to protect troops and prevent further attacks.
