Musk Confirms Starlink Restrictions Disrupted Ukrainian Military Operations
(AP) – SpaceX CEO Elon Musk acknowledged that his company restricted Starlink connectivity in Ukraine last week, prompting concerns about the impact on Ukrainian military operations. The satellite network is an important communications tool for Ukraine as it continues fighting Russian forces.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Saturday that Starlink and the military-focused Starshield system had returned to their previous operating levels. The disruption had reportedly affected frontline activities for more than a week.
Musk said the restrictions were intended to address Ukrainian military use of the commercial service for offensive drone attacks. He defended the decision by pointing to the service’s terms of use, while maintaining that the U.S. government oversees changes to Starshield, the military version of the technology.
Zelenskyy said the restored connection was helping Ukrainian forces maintain communications, coordinate supplies and defend against Russian attack drones.
The dispute created fresh friction between Kyiv and Washington amid broader disagreements over U.S. policy toward Moscow. Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara credited diplomatic engagement with Washington for resolving the issue, emphasizing the importance of reliable communications and drone operations for troops at the front.
President Donald Trump denied ordering the restrictions and said Musk should not be held responsible. Administration officials have offered differing accounts of possible coordination, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth denying White House involvement.
The developments coincided with renewed diplomatic efforts to end the war. Russia agreed to another round of negotiations with Ukraine and the United States next month. Separately, Kyiv and Moscow reached a limited ceasefire arrangement near the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky in southern Ukraine, reportedly brokered by first lady Melania Trump.
Fighting continued elsewhere. Ukrainian officials reported a deadly missile strike in Lozova, in the Kharkiv region, while Russian-installed authorities in Crimea reported electricity disruptions following overnight Ukrainian attacks.
Ukraine’s military also reported strikes against industrial facilities in the Russian cities of Tolyatti and Oryol. The facilities were described as producing materials or components used in Russian weapons systems. Local authorities reported damage in Tolyatti and three deaths following an attack in Oryol.
Ukrainian drones were also reported in Russia’s Omsk region, deep in western Siberia. Regional Governor Vitaly Khotsenko acknowledged that drones had “reached a northern industrial hub.” Online retailer Ozon separately reported a drone attack on its Omsk logistics center, saying no one was injured.
