Golan, Winter receives Shin Bet security two days before election, following party petitions
The Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) informed the office of Democrats party chairman Yair Golan that, as of Sunday morning, two days before the election, his security will be provided under the responsibility of the Shin Bet and funded by the state.
The Democrats previously petitioned the High Court of Justice, demanding that Shin Bet Director David Zini assume responsibility for Golan’s security as part of the agency’s legal obligation to safeguard the democratic system of government and its institutions.
State representatives presented a security plan for Golan and pledged to update it in accordance with the latest threat assessments.
People of Israel chairman Ofer Winter will also receive security from the Shin Bet.
The decision follows a months-long battle to secure Shin Bet protection for political party leaders.
Eisenkot receives Shin Bet protection despite Zini’s initial rejection
On Saturday, Gadi Eisenkot’s party, Yashar, announced that he would also receive Shin Bet protection starting Sunday.
In August, Zini initially ruled that Eisenkot did not meet the requirements needed to qualify for the elite Unit 730 protection.
After reviewing updated intelligence and threat assessments on the Yashar party chairman in September, the Advisory Committee for Personal Security recommended that the Shin Bet oversee Eisenkot’s protection.
