UPDATE: Jeanne Hengemuhle Confirmed As Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police
Jeanne Hengemuhle has been confirmed as Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, making her the first woman to lead the agency in its 105-year history.
Hengemuhle was selected by Governor Sherrill in February and has served as acting superintendent since, while awaiting Senate confirmation.
Her appointment drew some Republican opposition over her ability to collect her state pension while receiving a salary as superintendent. Hengemuhle retired from the State Police in 2024 after 26 years of service, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Legislation was introduced to allow the superintendent to wear the uniform and hold the rank of colonel while retaining retirement benefits. The position carries an annual salary of $210,000, while Hengemuhle’s pension is nearly $133,000.
Hengemuhle took over from Lieutenant Colonel David Sierotowicz, who served as interim superintendent following the retirement of former Superintendent Patrick Callahan at the end of 2025.
She becomes the first woman to lead the agency and the 15th superintendent in its history.
