OMNY Card Readers Destroyed, Security Cameras Covered With Paint at Subway Station Near Boro Park
Yisroel R.
Police are investigating after several OMNY card readers were destroyed and security cameras were covered with paint at the Church Avenue subway station.
The damage was discovered by a transit worker shortly before 11:30 a.m. last Wednesday. Video from the incident showed masked individuals damaging the OMNY readers with a drill and spraying paint over security cameras at the station.
Seven OMNY readers were damaged, causing approximately $18,851 in damage, according to police. The damaged readers have since been replaced by the MTA.
Flyers were also left behind criticizing the OMNY system over privacy concerns and making claims about Cubic, the company behind the system, and its ties to Israel. The flyers included pro-Palestinian and anti-NYPD messages and encouraged riders not to pay subway fares.
The NYPD is investigating the vandalism and is looking for those responsible. No arrests have been reported.
