Netanyahu Presses Trump for More Public Support Ahead of Tuesday’s Election, Axios Reports
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been pressing President Donald Trump for another public show of support ahead of Israel’s election on Tuesday, October 27, Axios reported Sunday, citing a U.S. source with knowledge of the matter and an Israeli source briefed on the effort.
According to the report by Barak Ravid, Netanyahu spoke with Trump twice in the past three days and asked him to build on his endorsement from last Sunday. The U.S. source said Netanyahu suggested wording for additional statements of support.
An Israeli source briefed on the effort told Axios that Netanyahu also proposed that Trump speak with Israeli reporters to express further backing for his campaign.
The U.S. source described the White House’s view of the lobbying as a “sign of desperation.” Neither the White House nor Netanyahu’s office immediately responded to Axios’s requests for comment.
The reported push follows Trump’s public endorsement of Netanyahu on October 18. In a letter posted on Truth Social, the president offered his “Complete and Total Endorsement” and urged Israelis to re-elect Netanyahu, as Belaaz reported.
Axios reported that final polls released Friday by three major Israeli television networks each projected 50 seats for Netanyahu’s bloc in the 120-member Knesset, short of a majority. Channel 14 was an outlier, projecting 60 seats for the bloc in a poll earlier in the week.
