Jeanne Hengemuhle Confirmed as First Female Superintendent of New Jersey State Police
Jeanne Hengemuhle has made history as the first woman to lead the New Jersey State Police in the agency’s 105-year history, following her confirmation as superintendent, according to an announcement by the State Police.
Hengemuhle, who was selected by Governor Mikie Sherrill in February 2026, becomes the 15th Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police.
A 26-year veteran of the agency, Hengemuhle retired in 2024 after rising through the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel. She returned from retirement earlier this year to take on the leadership role.
Throughout her career, Hengemuhle held several senior positions, including overseeing recruitment, personnel development, and training within the agency.
The New Jersey State Police congratulated Hengemuhle on the historic milestone, recognizing her decades of public service and commitment to the troopers and communities she now leads.
