Fort Lauderdale officials are warning residents to prepare for king tides that could bring flooding to low-lying areas beginning Thursday. Mayor Dean Trantalis said the city’s low elevation and extensive waterways make it particularly vulnerable to tidal flooding, with rainfall, winds and high groundwater levels potentially pushing water levels higher than forecast. The first predicted king tide period runs through Sunday, followed by additional periods later this month and in October, according to the city. Officials are urging residents to remain alert for localized flooding, which can occur outside the predicted tide windows when weather conditions raise water levels.
