Sweetbird North Breaks Ground In The Miami Design District An eight-story office and retail building is now under construction on the plaza behind Museum Garage, at 95 NE 40th Street. Sweetbird North will bring about 120,000 square feet to the Design District, with roughly 22,500 square feet of ground-floor retail and offices above. The project is designed by Snøhetta and backed by Miami Design District Associates, led by Craig Robins, and Raycliff Capital. Completion is slated for early 2028. Atria Health Research has already signed for 55,000 square feet on floors three through five. Hundreds Pack Delray Meeting Over Islamic Center Already Approved In Ag Reserve About 300 people filled the Dr. André Fladell Civic Center on Jog Road Friday, with more waiting in the hallway, as a meeting on the future of the Agricultural Reserve turned into questions about an Islamic center already approved near Lyons Road and 152nd Place South. The place of worship received administrative approval in January 2022. That review was done by county staff, not the Board of County Commissioners. A school and day care on the same 6-acre site, a former wholesale nursery, went through a public hearing and were approved in 2023. No vote was taken Friday. Resident Matthew Wallach asked whether there would be an amplified outdoor call to prayer, and whether surrounding neighborhoods would hear it five times a day. He also asked what security review had been done. County Commissioner Maria Sachs said county rules prohibit minarets and calls to prayer. She told residents questions about the application and funding should go to the applicant’s attorney, and said she wants to change the rule that lets places of worship get staff approval without a commission vote. Sachs said a separate public meeting will be set on the Islamic center. She repeatedly called for order as the crowd shouted and applauded.

Commissioner Sachs Responds After Packed Delray Meeting Over Islamic Center In Ag Reserve Palm Beach County Commissioner Maria Sachs is responding after a Friday workshop on the Agriculture Reserve turned heated over an Islamic center and school approved in 2023. The Civic Center west of Delray Beach was packed to capacity. Deputies stopped more people from getting in. Protesters gathered outside over the project at the southeast corner of Lyons Road and 152nd Place South. The plan covers a 6-acre former wholesale nursery. It includes a 3,632-square-foot place of worship and a 3,600-square-foot multipurpose building. Sachs, whose district includes the Ag Reserve, wrote on Facebook that she could not stop the Islamic center or the Tax Collector’s office under current rules. Houses of worship and government buildings can be approved by a county Development Review Officer if they meet the code, with no public hearing before the County Commission. “The root of the problem is an outdated zoning process,” she wrote. “Until we rewrite these rules, our hands are tied and your voices are sidelined.” She is asking residents to email all seven commissioners at [email protected] and push for zoning reform to protect the Ag Reserve. Luna Credits Donalds With Helping Block Offshore Windmills Off Florida’s Coast Rep. Anna Paulina Luna credited Byron Donalds on Monday with backing her even in private, when it was not convenient, on the fight to keep windmills off Florida’s coastline. Speaking at Donalds’ Coastal Corridor event on the water, Luna said a Florida delegation letter helped secure a federal study that blocked the turbines. “So we were actually able to, as a result of that letter, secure a federal study that did indeed block the windmills off the coast of Florida,” Luna said. She credited Donalds with helping her “save our coastlines.” Donalds, who is running for governor, used the Pinellas stop to roll out his Coastal Corridor plan, framed as a marine version of the state’s Wildlife Corridor. He said it would link and protect coastal waterways along the Gulf and Atlantic without new regulations or limits on fishing and public access.

Holocaust Memorial Hosting Day Of Remembrance For October 7 In Miami Beach The Holocaust Memorial in Miami Beach is opening its grounds Wednesday for a full day marking three years since the October 7 attacks. “Remembering October 7th” runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 1933-1945 Meridian Ave. It is free. The program includes a reading of the names of those killed, a candle-lighting ceremony, and programming at the Education Center. Films will be shown, including a virtual-reality experience of survivors. Holocaust survivors will speak through the day. One panel pairs survivor Saul Blau with a survivor of the Nova music festival. The memorial engraved the names of the roughly 1,200 people murdered in the attacks in Hebrew and English, the first place in the world to do so. Those granite panels sit beside the names of the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust. Man Arrested In ICE Costume At Brazilian Voting Site In Kendall A 46-year-old man was arrested Sunday at Miami Dade College’s Kendall campus while Brazilian citizens were voting in their country’s presidential election. Danilo Silva was walking between voting buildings in a blue ICE hat, sunglasses, a face mask, a blue ICE raid jacket and tactical-style boots, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office. People at the site told deputies they were afraid he was portraying himself as ICE and interfering with the vote. Deputies and Homeland Security detectives were already on campus. Silva told them he was not a federal agent. He said the gear was a costume he bought on Amazon, that he had already voted in a Brazilian jersey, and that he changed afterward to see people’s reactions. He was booked at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on charges that include voter intimidation, conspiracy to commit bribery and unlawful use of a police badge. He was also given a trespass warning barring him from the Kendall campus. In court, Judge Mindy Glazer told him this is not Halloween, and that the costume was not appropriate at the Brazilian election site. Scoop’s Take: Dressing up to watch people react is one thing. Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner is highlighting the role of license plate readers in helping police arrest a wanted fugitive and recover a handgun, as the city continues fighting to preserve the technology. Meiner said in a Facebook post that a license plate reader alerted Miami Beach police over the weekend to a vehicle whose owner was wanted on a Broward County felony warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence battery. Police located the vehicle in Miami Beach and, within minutes, conducted a felony traffic stop that led to an arrest, Meiner said.

A man in his 30s died after he was struck by a vehicle while riding a scooter early Tuesday morning in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood, police said. According to the Miami Police Department, officers responded to the area of Northwest Seventh Avenue and Northwest Seventh Street at approximately 4 a.m. after receiving reports of a man down in the roadway. When officers arrived, Miami Fire Rescue medics were already transporting the victim to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, authorities confirmed. The victim later died from his injuries.

Miami-Dade County is urging residents to take steps to prevent mosquito breeding following periods of rain. The county warned that standing water around homes can quickly become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, regardless of whether the weather is sunny or rainy. Residents are advised to drain and cover outdoor containers that can collect water. The county is also offering free mosquito inspections for residents concerned about potential breeding sites.

Palm Beach Gardens Approves Exter Center On Mandel JCC Campus Palm Beach Gardens City Council unanimously approved The Exter Center, a new 23,500-square-foot multipurpose building on the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County campus off Hood Road near I-95. The center is named for longtime Gardens residents Diane and Neil Exter. It will sit on the Federation’s 15-acre campus, home to the Mandel JCC and Arthur I. Meyer Jewish Preparatory School, which currently share one gym. Meyer Prep will use it for intramural sports. The Mandel JCC will use it for summer camp. The Federation plans lectures and theater performances there, and synagogues will be able to book the space for events. The project is expected to cost about $27.5 million. About $22 million has already been committed, with fundraising still underway. Neighbors in Alton backed the project but raised traffic concerns, especially on Beckman Terrace, the city street many visitors already use to reach the campus. Federation board chair Brian Seymour told council members officials will meet with residents about those issues.

Florida AG Sues TP-Link Over Router Safety Claims And China Ties Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier sued TP-Link today, saying the company sold Floridians the digital front door to their home network while misrepresenting how secure it was and how separated it is from China. The lawsuit, filed in Polk County, targets TP-Link Systems Inc. Uthmeier says the company told families its routers were secure, and that its HomeShield product covers all security scenarios and offers a 100% safeguard. He says those claims are not true. According to the AG, Chinese state-sponsored hackers have already exploited TP-Link routers sitting in American living rooms. He also says many models cannot update themselves automatically, and that TP-Link has stopped supporting them. Uthmeier says the company told buyers it had split from China and builds U.S. products in Vietnam. He calls that fiction. Research and manufacturing remain rooted in China, he says, and less than 1% of the parts in that Vietnam plant actually come from Vietnam. He also says TP-Link still claims a separation from a company the Pentagon has designated as an arm of the Chinese military. The state is seeking an injunction, restitution for Florida consumers, and penalties under Florida law. Iowa, Nebraska, and Montana filed similar suits the same day.

DeSantis Announces Results Of Florida’s Medicaid Fraud Crackdown Governor Ron DeSantis said today Florida’s Medicaid integrity push is already showing results, including more than 220 providers terminated and nearly $1 billion less in projected spending on applied behavior analysis services. The announcement came in West Palm Beach with Agency for Health Care Administration Secretary Shevaun Harris. AHCA says it has done more than 400 provider site visits since January, with extra focus on ABA, durable medical equipment, and adult day care. More than 150 fraud referrals have gone to the Attorney General’s Office over the past year. More than 260 providers have been put on payment restrictions or suspended. The more than 220 providers terminated in 2025 accounted for over $230 million in billed services. In some cases, providers billed Medicaid for more than 24 hours of services in a single day. Projected annual ABA spending is now $2.88 billion for fiscal year 2026-27, down from an earlier projection of $3.86 billion. The effort launched in June. The goal is to stop bad billing before taxpayer dollars go out, instead of chasing it afterward.

Man Arrested At MIA After Hiding 10 Live Birds In His Pants A man returning from Cuba was arrested at Miami International Airport after officers found 10 live birds hidden in his pants. He told officers he only had a carry-on and a fanny pack, and marked no on his customs form when asked about animals or wildlife. Democrats Leading First Wave Of Florida Mail Ballots Democrats are ahead in the first returned mail ballots for Florida’s 2026 general election. As of 9:30 p.m. Monday, 273,851 mail ballots had come back statewide. Democrat: 119,277 (43.6%) Republican: 96,589 (35.3%) No party: 51,123 (18.7%) Other: 6,862 (2.5%) That is a lead of 22,688 ballots, a D+8.3 mail margin. Florida’s Voice says that is 1.3 points more Democratic than the final 2024 mail count. . In-person early voting has not started. These numbers are returned mail ballots only. The city’s message was simple: “Three years after the October 7th attack, we remember.” About 1,200 people were murdered that day, and 251 were taken hostage. It was the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust, and it landed hard in Aventura, where so many families have direct ties to Israel. This is the third anniversary. A fresh look at Mana Wynwood Convention Center and Wynwood Marketplace shows the land set to become Carnegie Mellon University Miami. Citadel founder Ken Griffin is backing the campus with a $2 billion gift, part of a $3 billion donation to Carnegie Mellon. The other $1 billion goes to the university’s main campus in Pittsburgh. Griffin bought roughly 30 acres from Moishe Mana for about $1.1 billion, including the convention center, Wynwood Marketplace, and the old RC Cola plant. Mana called it the largest land assemblage deal in Florida history. The plan is a 35-acre campus for more than 3,500 undergraduate and graduate students, nearly 300 faculty, and more than 600 staff. Construction is expected to start in 2027, with the first graduate students targeted for 2028 if approvals come through. Mana’s team is expected to keep running events at the site for now, including shows tied to Miami Music Week and III Points. Baptist Health Breaks Ground On New Miami Neuroscience Institute After Extra $25 Million Gift Baptist Health broke ground today on a new neuroscience facility at Baptist Hospital in Miami, and announced Ken Griffin is adding another $25 million to the project. That brings his total giving for neuroscience at Baptist Health to $75 million, on top of the $50 million he gave in 2024. Miami Neuroscience Institute is now Baptist Health Kenneth C. Griffin Neuroscience Institute. The new building will be 197,000 square feet on the Baptist Hospital main campus and is expected to open in early 2029. The latest gift will also set up a Transformational Impact Fund for research, innovation, education, and prevention. Griffin is the founder and CEO of Citadel.

His argument was direct. Israel’s first duty was to bring the hostages home, defeat Hamas, and make sure an attack like that never happens again. The segment aired as Mayor Zohran Mamdani marked the anniversary by accusing Israel of “genocide” and “war crimes” in Gaza, after first noting that Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others. On the show, Gutfeld pushed back on that framing. He said Israel had one duty, the one Hamas forced on them. He also pressed the “Free Palestine” line with a simple question: free from what?

Another Round Of Storms Expected Across South Florida This Afternoon Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected to build again today, with the best chances along and north of Alligator Alley and across the east coast metro areas this afternoon. The National Weather Service says storms could move slowly and drop heavy rain in a short time, which means localized flooding is possible, especially along and north of Alligator Alley. Stronger storms could also bring gusty, erratic winds, poor visibility in downpours, and frequent lightning. If you are out this afternoon in Broward, Palm Beach, or the western suburbs, give the storms time to pass before heading into standing water.
