NASA astronaut Don Pettit has documented Miami’s dramatic change in nighttime lighting from space. Pettit shared a 2025 photograph of Miami taken from the International Space Station, showing the city’s shift from yellow-orange sodium-vapor lights to multicolored LEDs. “The city grid really pops!” Pettit wrote, noting that the transition to LED lighting is taking place worldwide. Pettit said he has spent 23 years documenting the global change across four missions to the ISS, photographing major cities from orbit.
