Report: U.S. Ready for Friday Talks if Iran Submits Nuclear Proposal

Feb 22, 2026·2 min read

WASHINGTON (VINnews) — U.S. negotiators are prepared to hold another round of nuclear talks with Iran on Friday in Geneva if Tehran submits a detailed proposal within the next 48 hours, a senior U.S. official said Sunday.

Barak Ravid from Axios reports that The official said the Trump administration is awaiting a written draft from Iran before confirming the meeting. If the proposal arrives early this week, U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner plan to travel to Geneva on Feb. 27 to begin detailed negotiations.

“If Iran gives a draft proposal, the U.S. is ready to meet in Geneva on Friday in order to start detailed negotiations to see if we can get a nuclear deal,” the official said.

U.S. officials describe the current diplomatic effort as potentially the last opportunity for a negotiated agreement before President Donald Trump considers military options alongside Israel. They say Trump could order a strike at any time, though several advisers are urging patience to allow diplomacy to proceed.

During talks in Geneva last Tuesday, Witkoff and Kushner asked Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to provide a detailed written proposal within days. According to the U.S. official, the American position calls for “zero enrichment” of uranium on Iranian soil but leaves open the possibility of limited or “token” enrichment if Iran can demonstrate that all pathways to a nuclear weapon are blocked.

Araghchi said Friday in a media interview that he expects to complete the draft proposal this weekend and will deliver it to U.S. officials once Iran’s political leadership approves it.

The official also confirmed that the sides may discuss the possibility of an interim agreement before reaching a comprehensive nuclear deal.

Meanwhile, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Saturday that he has urged Trump not to rule out military action, arguing that failing to confront Iran could have serious consequences.

Administration officials say the president has not made a final decision and continues to weigh diplomatic and military options.
