Police Investigate Alleged Antisemitic Assault on Jewish Teenager at Victorian Scout Camp
MELBOURNE, Australia (VINnews) — Authorities in the Australian state of Victoria are investigating after an 18-year-old Jewish man was allegedly assaulted at a scout camp in what police are treating as a suspected antisemitic attack, Australia’s 9News reported on Monday.
Police said the teen was at Lardner Park in West Gippsland on Saturday afternoon when an unidentified man allegedly confronted him and made abusive remarks about his religious attire and the Israeli flag he was carrying.
Later that evening, the same individual allegedly approached him again in a large crowd and punched him several times in the face.
The teenager sustained minor injuries, including bruising and facial swelling, and reported the incident to police the following day. Investigators said the assault appears to have been targeted.
In a statement, Victoria Police said hate-based conduct would not be tolerated and acknowledged that such incidents can leave communities feeling vulnerable.
The Anti-Defamation Commission condemned the attack, with its chair calling for a thorough investigation and stronger action against antisemitism.
No arrests have been announced. Police said inquiries remain ongoing and urged anyone with information to come forward.
