A potentially deadly carbon monoxide incident during Pesach on Edwin Lane in Monsey ended without tragedy after a detector in a neighboring apartment sounded the alarm, sources tell Monsey Scoop.

A carbon monoxide alarm sounded in one of the apartments, prompting a call to Chaverim of Rockland. Upon arrival, volunteers detected dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide and immediately began evacuating residents while requesting the Monsey Fire Department to respond.

Firefighters confirmed elevated carbon monoxide levels originating from the initial apartment and began checking additional units in the multi-family home. Some residents initially hesitated to allow access, but firefighters were eventually able to gain entry and evacuate all occupants as a precaution.

The source of the carbon monoxide was traced to a covered gas range burner, which caused gas to accumulate to deadly levels. The affected apartment reportedly did not have working carbon monoxide detectors. Several adults complained of severe headaches, a common symptom of exposure, a young boy was also found sleeping and was impacted by the carbon monoxide exposure.

Hatzoloh EMS treated five patients at the scene. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported.

Officials stressed that without the alert from a neighboring apartment’s carbon monoxide detector, the outcome could have been far more serious. Residents are strongly urged to ensure they have working carbon monoxide detectors installed, as they can save lives.
