Assemblyman Aron Wieder personally delivered a proclamation to the Piermont Fire Department two weeks ago, celebrating 175 years of dedicated volunteer service to the village.

Wieder praised the department’s deep roots in the community, noting how it began around 1832 with railroad workers protecting the New York and Erie Railroad, before formally organizing as the Piermont Fire Department in 1851. Since then, generations of local volunteers have served from village firehouses, starting with their first engines in 1868, always ready to protect their neighbors.

“These volunteers are more than just firefighters — they’re our friends and neighbors who answer the call day or night with incredible courage and heart,” Wieder said. “I’m truly grateful for their sacrifice and proud to honor them on this special milestone.”

Wieder also highlighted his co-sponsorship of legislation to boost the tax credit for volunteer first responders, which recently passed the Assembly. The bill would raise the state tax credit from $200 to $800 for eligible volunteers, and up to $1,600 for married couples filing jointly where both spouses qualify.

The Piermont Fire Department is marking its 175th anniversary with a community 5K run to recruit new volunteers and support local charities.

In the proclamation, Wieder officially recognized the department as a pillar of the community and thanked its members for their unwavering commitment to keeping Piermont safe.
