Mrs. Miriam Meijers, a pioneering Shlucha who helped build Chabad life in Amsterdam alongside her husband, Rabbi Eliezer Daniel Meijers, the Rebbe’s first Shliach to Holland, passed away on Friday, 24 Av, 5786.

She was 82.

Miriam Meijers was a pioneering Shlucha whose home and family were at the heart of the early growth of Chabad in the Netherlands.

She was the wife of Rabbi Eliezer Daniel Meijers, OBM, who was sent by the Rebbe to Holland and became a pioneering figure in establishing Chabad life in Amsterdam.

After their marriage, the couple settled in Amsterdam at the Rebbe’s direction. At a time when maintaining a full Chassidishe way of life in postwar Holland presented considerable challenges, they built a warm and steadfast Jewish home and raised their children with an uncompromising commitment to Torah and Chassidus.

For decades, Mrs. Meijers stood devotedly alongside her husband in their Shlichus. The Meijers’ home in Amsterdam became known as an open house for Chassidim, Rabbonim, Shluchim and Jewish visitors from around the world.

Prominent Chassidim and Shluchim from Eretz Yisroel were hosted there over the years, as were members of the Rebbe’s Mazkirus while traveling through Amsterdam. Farbrengens were held in the home, sometimes continuing late into the night, making it a unique center of Chassidishe warmth and hospitality.

Mrs. Meijers also devoted herself to raising a proud Chassidishe family. She and her husband made great sacrifices to ensure that their children received a complete Chabad education, even when that required sending them far from home to study.

In their later years, Rabbi and Mrs. Meijers moved to Eretz Yisroel and settled in Yerushalayim.

Remarkably, Mrs. Meijers passed away on 24 Menachem Av, just one day after the 11th yahrzeit of her husband, who passed away on 23 Menachem Av, 5775.

She is survived by her children, Rabbi Pinchas Avraham Meijers, Av Beis Din in The Hague and author of Divrei Pinchas; Rabbi Dovid Eliyahu Meijers; Rabbi Baruch Mendel Meijers of Crown Heights; Rabbi Ezra Emanuel Meijers of Beitar Illit; and Mrs. Sarah Nemanow, wife of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Nemanow of Brunoy, France; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The Levaya will take place Friday afternoon, leaving Shamgar Funeral Home in Yerushalayim for burial on Har HaZeisim.
