Wilbur T. Aldridge, a longtime Haverstraw resident and prominent civil rights advocate who dedicated decades to public service and advancing equality in Rockland County, has passed away.

Aldridge was well known for his longtime leadership and involvement with the NAACP and for his work advocating for civil rights, fairness and opportunity throughout the community.

Rockland County Legislature Chairman Jay Hood Jr. mourned Aldridge’s passing, describing him as a dedicated community leader whose work left a lasting impact across Rockland County and beyond.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Wilbur T. Aldridge, a longtime Haverstraw resident, a constituent and someone I was proud to know. His commitment to civil rights, equality and public service made a lasting difference in Rockland County and far beyond,” Hood said.

“Wilbur devoted decades of his life to standing up for others. Through his leadership with the NAACP, his community involvement and his willingness to speak out against injustice, he helped open doors, bring people together and make our community a better place.

“His was a strong and steady voice for fairness and opportunity, and his passing is a tremendous loss for Haverstraw, Rockland County, and beyond.

“On behalf of the Rockland County Legislature, I extend my deepest condolences to Wilbur’s family, friends and the many people whose lives he touched. His legacy of service and advocacy will not be forgotten.”

In 2017, Aldridge was presented with the Rockland County Legislature’s Distinguished Service Award, its highest honor, by Legislators Jay Hood Jr. and Toney L. Earl in recognition of his contributions to the community.
