Sen. Bernie Sanders is calling on Democratic Party leaders to end super PAC participation in Democratic primaries, arguing that the fundraising groups have created what he described as a “corrupt system.”

In a letter shared with CBS News, Sanders addressed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin. He argued that billionaire-funded super PACs are spending enormous sums to influence Democratic primaries despite, in his view, having no particular interest in seeing Democrats win.

Sanders pointed to the Michigan Senate race, where Democratic candidate Haley Stevens received more than $50 million in outside support, including $30 million from AIPAC. Sanders wrote that AIPAC is now reportedly planning to spend “tens of millions” to support Republican Mike Rogers, the opponent of Abdul El-Sayed in the general election.

“What is particularly obscene is not only the outrageous amount of money coming into Democratic primaries from billionaire-funded super PACs, but the reality that these special interests have no particular desire to see Democrats win,” Sanders wrote.

He also called for a constitutional amendment to repeal Citizens United, legislation allowing public financing of elections, and an immediate Democratic Party ban on super PAC participation in primaries.

“I urge you to take action and make clear that the Democratic Party will no longer maintain this corrupt system,” Sanders wrote, adding that “the time to act is now.”
