Elon Musk is reportedly spearheading an extraordinarily ambitious project in Texas to construct a massive semiconductor manufacturing facility that could become the largest building in the world by floor area.

The proposed facility, dubbed “Terafab,” is a joint project involving Tesla and SpaceX and is planned for southeastern Texas.

According to reports, the complex could encompass approximately 100 million square feet — roughly 9.3 million square meters — making it more than five times larger than the building currently recognized as the world’s largest by floor area.

For comparison, the New Century Global Center in Chengdu, China, encompasses approximately 18.9 million square feet, or about 1.76 million square meters.

Musk has described the planned Texas facility as being on track to become the largest building on Earth “by far,” while also predicting that the enormous complex will be exceptionally beautiful.

But the scale of the building is only one component of the project.

According to journalist Loredana Harsana, a key feature of Terafab would be its vertically integrated manufacturing model.

Rather than dividing various stages of semiconductor production among multiple facilities and locations, the factory is intended to bring logic-chip manufacturing, memory production and advanced packaging operations together under a single roof.

The facility would be designed for large-scale production of advanced artificial intelligence chips, with the chips potentially intended for applications both on Earth and in space.

The project, however, could depend heavily on financial incentives from the State of Texas.

According to the report, eight applications for tax incentives have been submitted involving local school districts. The applications reportedly seek a 10-year limitation on maintenance and operating taxes covering approximately 48% of the estimated value during each phase of the development.

The State of Texas would cover the remaining difference through its JETI economic development program.

The company has reportedly warned that without the incentives, the project would not meet the required minimum investment threshold and could instead be relocated to Arizona.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has expressed strong support for the massive development.

According to Abbott, the first phase alone is expected to involve an investment exceeding $16.8 billion and could create approximately 3,000 new jobs.

Despite the enormous proposed scale of the facility and support from Texas officials, Tesla and SpaceX have not yet announced an official date for construction to begin.
