Israel’s Health Ministry announced Tuesday that a traveler who recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo has been placed in isolation after developing symptoms that raised suspicion of Ebola.

Officials stressed that the case has not been confirmed and that, at this stage, it remains only a suspected case.

The individual returned to Israel several days ago and subsequently sought medical attention after developing a fever.

The patient is being treated under isolation conditions at Soroka Medical Center in Be’er Sheva in accordance with established medical protocols and preparations made by the healthcare system for a potential Ebola case.

Tests are currently being conducted to determine whether the individual is infected with the virus, with results expected within the next 24 hours.

An epidemiological investigation is also underway to identify potential contacts and assess whether any additional precautions are necessary.

The Health Ministry said it has been closely monitoring developments in Africa in recent months following Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

Israeli health authorities have also conducted preparedness assessments to ensure hospitals and other parts of the healthcare system are equipped to respond appropriately should an Ebola case be identified.

The ministry reiterated its recommendation that Israelis avoid nonessential travel to areas experiencing active Ebola outbreaks, particularly affected regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

Those who must travel to such areas are advised to obtain individualized guidance from a travelers’ health clinic before departure.

The Health Ministry also issued instructions for travelers returning from the Democratic Republic of Congo or Uganda, particularly those who visited areas with active Ebola transmission.

Anyone who develops a fever or other unusual symptoms within 21 days of returning is being instructed to remain at home, avoid contact with other people and contact the Health Ministry’s Kol Habriut hotline by telephone.

Callers should immediately inform health officials that they recently traveled in an area experiencing Ebola cases so that appropriate precautions can be taken.

The Health Ministry again emphasized that the hospitalized traveler has not been diagnosed with Ebola and that the case remains under investigation pending laboratory results.

Officials said additional updates will be provided to the public and medical professionals as necessary.
