NATO THREAT: Russia Builds Long-Range Drone Bases Near Alliance Borders

Aug 17, 2026·1 min read

Russia has established a network of 10 new drone bases along its borders with Belarus and Ukraine, equipped with launch infrastructure capable of sending advanced long-range drones deep into NATO territory, according to an investigation by Britain’s Telegraph.

An analysis of satellite imagery and leaked documents identified at least 59 dedicated launch rails, some designed for jet-powered drones with a range of approximately 1,000 kilometers — putting major cities including Warsaw within striking distance.

Seven of the 10 sites have already been used to launch drone attacks against Kyiv, according to the report. Some of the bases were constructed within roughly two years, with their proximity to the border and design allowing Russia to increase the pace of launches and potentially evade air defense systems.

NATO is closely monitoring the developments. An alliance official said NATO is expanding its interception and air-defense capabilities and remains prepared to “defend every inch of Allied territory.”

The Russian drone threat has previously reached NATO territory. In September 2025, approximately 19 Russian drones entered Polish airspace from Belarus before being intercepted by NATO aircraft.
