IDF ON ALERT: Senior Intelligence Official Warns Iran Situation Could Deteriorate At Any Time

Aug 18, 2026·2 min read

Israel’s security establishment is preparing for the possibility of a renewed deterioration with Iran as the 60-day period connected to the U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding draws to a close without a clear agreement on Iran’s nuclear program or the Strait of Hormuz.

Security officials told Walla that it remains unclear whether President Trump will approve another extension of the negotiating period or move toward unilateral action. Defense Minister Israel Katz and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir have therefore instructed the military to prepare for all scenarios, both defensive and offensive.

The IDF Intelligence Directorate has updated its warning models regarding Iran and refreshed its target bank, while the Operations Directorate, Planning Directorate and Israeli Air Force have sharpened their assessments and coordination with the U.S. military and countries in the region.

A senior Military Intelligence officer recently warned that the situation could deteriorate at any time, stressing that the IDF must remain prepared. The officer’s original assessment was that deterioration could come “within a few hours, days, weeks or months.”

“We were suspicious throughout the ceasefire, and we remain suspicious now,” another security official familiar with the regional tensions said.

The memorandum signed in June called for an “immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts,” but the arrangement quickly began to unravel. President Trump said on July 7 that the agreement was “over,” while Tehran has repeatedly accused Washington of violating its commitments.

The 60-day period was not intended to automatically end the ceasefire, but rather served as an extendable window during which the United States and Iran were expected to reach a broader final agreement, including on the future of Iran’s nuclear program.
