IDF OPENS CRIMINAL PROBES: Military Reviews Five Major Gaza Incidents, Orders Investigations In Two Cases
The IDF announced Wednesday that it has completed reviews of five major incidents from the Gaza war, ordering criminal investigations in two cases while determining that three others did not warrant criminal proceedings. The cases include the deaths of World Central Kitchen employees, Hind Rajab and members of her family, 15 people in Tel al-Sultan, and two separate incidents involving Médecins Sans Frontières personnel.
In the April 2024 World Central Kitchen incident, seven aid workers were killed after IDF forces struck vehicles belonging to the organization. The military found that troops mistakenly believed Hamas terrorists had taken control of the convoy after identifying armed personnel and later misidentifying individuals in the vehicles. Despite serious failures, the Chief Military Prosecutor determined there was no reasonable suspicion of criminal misconduct. Several officers had already been removed from their positions or formally reprimanded.
A criminal investigation will be opened into the January 2024 incident involving Hind Rajab, after the IDF review found alleged failures in coordinating the movement of a Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance sent to evacuate casualties. The ambulance was struck and two paramedics were killed. A second criminal probe was ordered into the March 2025 Tel al-Sultan incident, where 15 Gazans, including medical personnel and a UN employee, were killed during shootings involving rescue vehicles near an IDF ambush targeting Hamas terrorists. Six of those killed were identified as Hamas members.
The IDF also reviewed two incidents involving Médecins Sans Frontières. In one, troops struck a building in Khan Yunis they believed posed a threat, killing two women and wounding seven people. In the other, two MSF employees were killed after a convoy returned toward Gaza City without the required coordination; the military review found their deaths may have resulted from ricochet or bullet splash from warning fire. No criminal investigation will be opened in either case.
The IDF said that since the start of the war, its General Staff Fact-Finding and Assessment Mechanism has completed reviews of approximately 150 incidents and transferred them to the Military Prosecution for examination.
