BDE: Father of Jerusalem Mayor: Shalom Lion, Z”L, Passes Away at 92

Aug 20, 2026·2 min read

Shalom Lion, z”l, father of Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion, was niftar on Wednesday at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv at the age of 92.

The niftar was born in Thessaloniki, Greece. His parents immigrated to Israel in the 1930s shortly after his birth. His father’s family remained in Europe and perished in Auschwitz during the Holocaust.

Lion worked in the automotive field and for many years served as a chazzan and paytan at the Heichal Moshe shul in Givatayim. His sons, Moshe and Nissim, followed in his footsteps and also served as shlichei tzibbur for many years.

He married Chana, a’h, who passed away several years ago. They had three children: Moshe Lion, mayor of Jerusalem; Prof. Nissim Lion of Bar-Ilan University, one of Israel’s leading researchers of Chareidi society; and Prof. Orly Miron, head of the Department of Social and Health Sciences at Bar-Ilan University.

“Abba and Ima devoted their entire lives to educating their children,” Prof. Lion once said. “That was the central goal of their lives.”

His levayah is scheduled for Thursday at 5:00 p.m. at the Kiryat Shaul cemetery in Givatayim.

The family will sit shivah at 23 Sderot Ben Maimon in Jerusalem.

Yehi Zichro Baruch.
