The New York State Police are increasing patrols across the state as part of an enforcement crackdown targeting drunk, drug-impaired and reckless drivers ahead of Labor Day.

The initiative is part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which began Wednesday, August 19, and will continue through Labor Day, Monday, September 7.

State Police and local law enforcement agencies will conduct increased patrols and sobriety checkpoints throughout the enforcement period, with authorities warning that Labor Day weekend traditionally brings heavier traffic along with an increased risk of crashes, serious injuries and fatalities.

Troopers will use both marked State Police vehicles and Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement, or CITE, vehicles. The unmarked vehicles blend in with regular traffic, allowing troopers to more easily spot motorists committing violations before activating their emergency lights.

The enforcement effort is partially funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.

Officials are also reminding motorists to plan ahead before drinking. The New York State STOP-DWI Foundation’s “Have a Plan” mobile app allows users to locate taxi services, create a designated-driver list, review DWI laws and penalties, and report suspected impaired drivers.

During the 2025 Labor Day enforcement period, State Police issued 9,912 tickets and arrested 225 people for DWI.
