Mrs. Miriam Slavin, a Holocaust survivor, longtime Crown Heights resident and matriarch of a large Chabad family, passed away.
She was 96.
Mrs. Slavin was the daughter of Rabbi Yitzchok Dovid Sholom Mincberg HYD, the famed Mashgiach Ruchni of Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin, and Rebbetzin Shaina Gittel Mincberg.
Born in Ostrów Mazowiecka, Poland, she survived the Holocaust together with her mother and six sisters. Her father, brothers, grandparents and other members of her extended family were murdered during the Holocaust.
Throughout years of extraordinary hardship, including time in Siberia, Uzbekistan and France, her mother raised her daughters with a deep commitment to Yiddishkeit.
Even at a young age, Mrs. Slavin displayed the leadership, determination and resourcefulness that helped her family survive extraordinarily difficult circumstances. She later became known as a highly intelligent and business-savvy woman. At a time when it was uncommon for women in her community to pursue business, the Rebbe instructed her to enter the business world.
While in Tashkent, Mrs. Slavin was deeply moved by the Ahavas Yisroel shown to her family by Lubavitcher Chassidim. She later married Rabbi Hirshel Slavin, a Lubavitcher Chossid, in Paris, France, in 1951.
The couple eventually settled in Crown Heights, where they raised their family and maintained an open home known for its Hachnosas Orchim.
Mrs. Slavin developed a deep connection with the Rebbe and often spoke about the guidance she received from the Rebbe throughout her life.
In her later years, she shared her experiences with younger generations, preserving memories of Jewish life before the Holocaust, the hardships she and her family endured during the war years, and the rebuilding of Jewish life and her own family afterward.
She is survived by her children, Rabbi Eliyahu Slavin of Crown Heights; Rabbi Velvel Slavin of Kfar Chabad, Israel; Mrs. Batya Goldberger of Crown Heights; and Rabbi Dovid Slavin of Sydney, Australia; as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Rabbi Tzvi Hirshel Slavin, and their daughter, Mrs. Tzivia Zaklos OBM of Montreal, Canada.
The levaya will pass by 770 Eastern Parkway on Wednesday at 1:30 PM.
The family will be sitting Shiva at 440 Crown Street in Crown Heights.
