Crown Heights Shmira volunteers, working alongside the NYPD, have made more than two dozen arrests across Crown Heights over the summer in connection with burglaries, thefts, assaults and other incidents, while several investigations remain ongoing.
Among the most recent cases was the arrest Thursday morning of a suspect accused of breaking into a commercial van more than two weeks earlier and stealing several thousand dollars worth of equipment.
The theft occurred on August 11 at approximately 9:00 a.m., when the suspect allegedly broke the lock of a van parked near President Street and Albany Avenue and removed equipment valued at several thousand dollars.
Shmira members continued working on the case and, on August 27 at approximately 11:00 a.m., located the alleged perpetrator near Atlantic Avenue and Brooklyn Avenue. NYPD officers responded and placed him under arrest.
In another recent incident, a burglar who allegedly forced his way into a Crown Heights home in the middle of the night was caught while still inside the house.
Crown Heights Shmira received a call at approximately 3:00 a.m. last Thursday reporting that a suspect had forced his way into a home near Albany Avenue and Eastern Parkway. Members rushed to the location and found the suspect still inside. NYPD officers arrived moments later and took him into custody.
Meanwhile, Shmira is continuing to search for a suspect who allegedly assaulted a mother walking with her children in Crown Heights last Wednesday afternoon.
The unprovoked attack occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. near Schenectady Avenue and St. Johns Place. Shmira members canvassed the surrounding area, but the suspect had already fled.

The incidents are among dozens that Shmira members have responded to during the summer months.
On August 26 at approximately 12:45 p.m., a suspect was arrested near East New York Avenue and Kingston Avenue for shoplifting. She was also wanted in connection with a previous package theft.
A day earlier, on August 25 at approximately 3:00 p.m., a suspect allegedly shoplifted from a store near Lefferts Avenue and Kingston Avenue and assaulted the manager while leaving. The suspect was tracked down near East 91st Street and East New York Avenue, arrested and charged with robbery.
On August 24 at approximately 5:00 p.m., a suspect entered a building near Lefferts Avenue and Albany Avenue and allegedly attempted to steal. Shmira members located him near Schenectady Avenue and Empire Boulevard. The suspect had open warrants and was wanted in connection with several other burglaries.
Earlier that day, at approximately 1:15 p.m., another suspect accused of shoplifting from a store near East New York Avenue and Kingston Avenue was apprehended near East New York Avenue and Albany Avenue.
An investigation remains open into an August 20 incident in which a suspect allegedly shoplifted from a store near Montgomery Street and Kingston Avenue at approximately 7:00 p.m. while carrying a knife. Shmira has identified the suspect and is searching for him.
On August 12 at approximately 7:30 p.m., a repeat offender wanted in connection with a previous burglary was apprehended near Clarkson Avenue and Albany Avenue.
Two days earlier, on August 10 at approximately 4:00 p.m., a package theft suspect was arrested near Schenectady Avenue and President Street.
Shortly after midnight on August 9, two suspects wearing ski masks allegedly attempted to steal a parked vehicle near President Street and Kingston Avenue before fleeing. The NYPD is investigating.
July Incidents
On July 26 at approximately 8:00 p.m., a suspect wanted in connection with a burglary near Brooklyn Avenue and Carroll Street was located near Eastern Parkway and Troy Avenue.
Earlier that day, at approximately 4:00 p.m., a suspect wanted for an assault with a weapon that left a victim injured, as well as an attempted burglary, was arrested near St. Johns Place and Troy Avenue.
A shoplifting suspect was apprehended near Lefferts Avenue and Kingston Avenue on July 19 at approximately 2:00 p.m. following a theft near Empire Boulevard and Brooklyn Avenue.
On July 16 at approximately 1:00 p.m., a suspect wanted for a package theft near Lincoln Place and Albany Avenue was arrested at the Utica Avenue subway station.
On July 12 at approximately midnight, a DWI driver allegedly crashed near Schenectady Avenue and President Street and fled the scene. He was later apprehended near Crown Street and Albany Avenue.
On July 1 at approximately 10:00 p.m., a suspect accused of stealing a package near Carroll Street and Albany Avenue was located near Union Street and Utica Avenue.
June Incidents
On June 26 at approximately 5:00 p.m., community members concerned about a suspicious man near Crown Street and Kingston Avenue contacted Shmira. Responding members investigated, and after the suspect was found to have open warrants, he was placed under arrest by the NYPD.
A package theft suspect was arrested near President Street and Albany Avenue on June 21 at approximately 7:00 p.m.
On June 17 at approximately 8:30 p.m., a repeat offender wanted for a burglary near Montgomery Street and Troy Avenue was located near Lenox Road and Albany Avenue.
A suspect was arrested for theft near Empire Boulevard and Brooklyn Avenue on June 15 at approximately 1:00 p.m.
In an incident early on June 14, a suspect allegedly chased victims with a sharp metal object near President Street and Kingston Avenue at approximately 2:00 a.m. The suspect was apprehended near East New York Avenue and Troy Avenue.
An elderly victim was assaulted near Eastern Parkway and Kingston Avenue on June 13 at approximately 8:00 p.m. and required transport to the hospital. Shmira assisted in identifying the suspect, and the NYPD took a report.
On June 12 at approximately 4:30 p.m., a suspect was arrested near Fulton Street and Throop Avenue in connection with an assault that occurred near Empire Boulevard and Kingston Avenue.
A suspect who allegedly trespassed and attempted to steal near Carroll Street and Schenectady Avenue on June 10 at approximately 4:30 a.m. was apprehended near Troy Avenue and East New York Avenue.
On June 9 at approximately 6:30 p.m., a victim was struck with a stick and had his yarmulke snatched near Sterling Place and Troy Avenue. The suspect fled, and Shmira and the NYPD are continuing to investigate.
A DWI driver who crashed was arrested near St. Johns Place and Albany Avenue on June 8 at approximately 9:00 p.m.
On Shabbos, June 6, at approximately 3:00 p.m., a suspect allegedly attempted to break into a home near New York Avenue and President Street. The suspect was still at the location when Shmira members and NYPD officers arrived and was arrested.
Two additional arrests took place on June 1. At approximately 10:45 a.m., a suspect was arrested for theft near Remsen Avenue and Rutland Road. Earlier, at approximately midnight, a suspect was arrested near St. Johns Place and Schenectady Avenue in connection with an assault that caused injuries.
