Former Sephardi Chief Rabbi Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef launched a scathing attack on Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara on Saturday night following her request to cancel or postpone a memorial rally for Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, arguing that holding the event during the election period could be considered election propaganda.

“At Maran’s seven-day mourning period, nearly one million people came - secular, religious, National Religious, Hasidic and Lithuanian Jews. The entire nation of Israel was there," Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef said. “When the anniversary comes, it is only right to hold a memorial gathering in his honor, and suddenly a legal opinion is issued. That crazy woman, Miara, issues a legal opinion saying that a memorial gathering in his honor cannot be held."

He went on to compare the decision concerning his father with memorial events for other national figures. “Rabin was assassinated shortly before an election, and they do not ban events in his memory. But Maran, the greatest Torah scholar of his generation, who was not a political figure but a man of Torah - they issue a legal opinion saying that a memorial gathering cannot be held before the elections."

He concluded with a sharply personal attack: “May the Almighty destroy her and strike her with His punishment. She is going after Maran, the greatest of the generations. This will not go unanswered."
