Mohammed is the most common name among boys entering first grade in Israel for the 2026-2027 school year, according to new figures released by the Population and Immigration Authority.

The data, published ahead of the start of the new school year, show Mohammed leading the overall ranking for boys, followed by Yosef in second place and Adam in third.

David ranked fourth, followed by Omer, Ariel, Daniel, Lavi, Eitan and Ahmad, rounding out the ten most common boys’ names nationwide.

The rankings look significantly different when examining only Jewish students. Among Jewish boys entering first grade, Ariel is the most common name, followed by David and Lavi.

Uri ranked fourth among Jewish boys, followed by Daniel, Eitan, Noam, Itay, Rafael and Yehuda.

Among girls across Israel, Tamar was the most common name for incoming first graders. Miriam ranked second and Avigail third, followed by Adele, Sarah, Yael, Noa, Shira, Lia and Maya.

Tamar also topped the ranking specifically among Jewish girls, followed by Avigail and Yael. Noa, Adele, Shira, Sarah, Ayala, Lia and Ella completed the top ten.

The figures provide a snapshot of naming trends among the newest generation of Israeli schoolchildren as families prepare for the beginning of the 2026-2027 academic year.
