The Israeli Navy has identified increased Turkish naval activity in recent months, including military exercises and a growing Turkish presence in the Mediterranean and in areas used by Israeli naval forces, Kan News reports.

Against the backdrop of growing tensions between Israel and Turkey, the Navy is preparing for what defense officials describe as the possibility of a “turn” in relations — including the operational and strategic need to be ready for a potential military confrontation with Turkey.

The assessment does not mean the IDF believes a confrontation with Turkey is imminent. Rather, the Navy is preparing for the possibility that relations could deteriorate significantly and require Israel to contend directly with Turkish military forces.

The growing concern also comes amid Turkish military activity connected to Syria, where Israel has been closely monitoring Ankara’s efforts to expand its presence and capabilities.

Despite the tensions, Israeli defense officials have stressed that Israel does not want Turkey to become an enemy, and channels remain in place between the two countries aimed at preventing friction and unintended escalation.

The Israeli Navy is continuing to monitor Turkish exercises, deployments and naval activity as it prepares for the possibility of a significant change in the strategic relationship between Jerusalem and Ankara.
